I'm constantly startled by the number of virulently anti-SM people I run across who I assume are that way from ignorance, only to find they used to be us, wanted to be us, etc.Trinityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06846032433424879965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-760704342202547222.post-78621227951013045212007-07-08T10:35:00.000-07:002007-07-08T10:35:00.000-07:00I thought you in particular might have useful thou...I thought you in particular might have useful thoughts about that.

One of the things that's one of my little hobbyhorses is striking the balance between the Apollonian and the Dionysian -- the rational and the ecstatic. I think the culture I live in sucks at finding a place for the ecstatic; look at how many of the traditional tools are or have been demonised (sex and sexuality, especially violent or utterly uninhibited sexuality; drug use; some genres of music; pain ...).

Not everyone has the Maenad-song singing in their heads; it's a scary thing to have, even as it's a sweet hot bloody call of the wild. And there's very little space for it, to learn how to have it without it being automatically damaging, which means -- if one trusts the myths on the subject -- that it comes out more and more savage in its restraints. And it's even more terrifying, I think, for the people who don't know the tune, who can't feel the deep drumbeat of the dark in the same way -- because there's no sense of where this is coming from.

I think probably the most terror is in those who can hear the tune but can't bear to let themselves even consider going out into the wild. Those civilised boundaries get clung to as something that keeps people human, I think, because embracing the bestial of the Maenad tests that humanness, tests whether it's possible to go there and come back, or go there and not do things one can't bear to have done in the light of day.Dw3t-Hthrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11584245136407694660noreply@blogger.com
